Nine Days of Prayer for a United Nation – from the Sisters of Mercy

This election year has exposed deep rifts within our country as candidates and their supporters launch personal attacks on one another and on the most marginalized of our society, including immigrants and refugees, Americans and workers displaced by a globalized economy. Please join the Mercy Community in praying daily for voters to consider the common good in their choices for national, state and local leaders; to treat with respect even those who hold differing opinions about the direction of our country; and to commit ourselves to a peaceful transfer of power after the election. Let us be Mercy at this time through our prayer, rhetoric and actions at this time of potential national stress.

November 1 (Day 5)

Let us pray for leaders who will work with others to bring safety to the world, who will lead a government that provides for the growth of this country without taking the resources from others to achieve it. Let us be instruments of your peace!!

I will look after my sheep, says the Lord, and I will appoint a shepherd to pasture them, and I, the Lord will be their God. ~Ezekiel 34:11

Holy Spirit, by your light you guide this world towards the Father’s love and accompany creation as it groans in travail. You also dwell in our hearts and you inspire us to do what is good, Praise be to You!

~Laudato Sí prayer

Nine Days of Prayer for a United Nation – from the Sisters of Mercy

November 2 (Day 6)

Let us pray that we break all divisions among us and strive to create a just and peaceful world for all.

Happy are those who fear the Lord, who delight in God’s commands. They shine through the darkness, a light for the upright, they are gracious, merciful and just. ~Psalm 112

Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey toward your infinite light. ~Laudato Sí’ Prayer

Tomorrow, Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m., Daylight Saving Time ends and Standard Time begins. Remember to turn clocks BACK one hour tonight before retiring. Savor that additional hour of well-earned sleep.

November 3 (Day 7)

Let us pray that love permeates all of our actions and that we strive to find the truth in every person, especially those with whom we have differing opinions and stands on issues. Let us be instruments of peace!

May Our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. ~2 Thessalonians 2:16

Love, overflowing with small gestures of mutual care, is also civic and political, and it makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world. Love for society and commitment to the common good are outstanding expressions of a charity which affects not only relationships between individuals but also, macro-relationships, social, economic and political ones. ~Laudato Sí’ #231

November 4 (Day 6) - Election Eve

Let us pray that God blesses our divided nation with the will and determination to lay aside differences

and seek the common good. Let us be instruments of peace!

To you, O God, I call. My Rock, do not be deaf to me. If you fail to answer me I will join those who go down to the pit. Hear the sound of my pleading when I cry to you, lifting my hands toward your holy place. Do not drag me off with the wicked with those who do wrong.

The common good is the sum of those conditions of social life, which allow social groups and their individual members relatively thorough and ready access to their own fulfillment. Underlying the principle of the common good is respect for the human person as such, endowed with basic and inalienable rights ordered to his or her own development. It also has to do with the overall welfare of society, applying the principle of subsidiarity. ~Laudato Sí’ #157

Food for thought - A Bit of Civics

[In the field of political science, civics is the study of the civil and political rights

and obligations of citizens in a society. – Wikipedia]

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, registered voters will elect the persons for the next four years who will lead our Republic. [A “republic” is a form of government in which the people hold power, but elect representatives to exercise that power.] Your voice matters. Perhaps you have done a mail-in-ballot. Thank you. If not, and you are a registered voter, please go to the polls and vote!

Is the United States a democracy or a republic?

The Constitution establishes a federal democratic republic form of government. That is, we have an indivisible union of 50 sovereign States. It is a democracy because people govern themselves. It is representative because people choose elected officials by free and secret ballot.

We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what's in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. - Barack Obama

Newt Gingrich in his book Rediscovering God in America: Reflections on the Role of Faith in Our Nation’s History and Future TN: Nashville/TX: Dallas/Mexico: Mexico City/BR: Rio de Janeiro/China: Beijing: Thomas Nelson [Publisher] 2009 writes:

Carved into the fireplace mantel in the White House State Dining Room are the words of President John Adams to his wife Abigail after first moving into the residence in November 1800. President Franklin Roosevelt subsequently discovered Adams’ words in the later years of World War II and had them carved into the stone fireplace below a portrait of Abraham Lincoln:

“I pray to heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that hereafter inhabit it. May none but the honest and wise men [***] ever rule under this roof.” (page 99)

***At the time President Adams wrote these words [1800], women were not even on the political landscape. If they were, perhaps President John Adams would have written:

“May none but the honest and wise men and women ever rule under this roof.”

Pray, pray some more. Consider the legacy that mail-in, early voting, and tomorrow’s voters will leave for the generations to come. If you have not already voted, please Vote!

A BFS Star Shines Brightly!

Our very own Sister Mary Elizabeth Klier was pictured and profiled in Chapter 21, pages 65-66 as “Taking the Reigns” in Sister Marietta [Fritz] Saginaw’s Saint by Joan & Craig Douglas, published by Emmaus House of Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan, 2020. Sister Mary Elizabeth was referenced by Proverbs 31:20: “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” Sister lent her math and bookkeeping skills to the organization as well as other skills.

On page 62 Joan Douglas, co-author, writes: “Thankfully, Sister Mary Elizabeth stepped up from her five hours on Friday afternoon shift, and, when she was not teaching religion in the elementary school, she came to Emmaus and handled financial matters, correspondence, donations, and she helped me [Joan Douglas] to maintain my focus—keep the organization running as smoothly as we are able. She was and is my safety net.”

Sister Mary Elizabeth, You do us BFS proud!

A BFS Star Shines Brightly!

Sister Mary Elena spends her days in all-boys-school Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills Michigan where she is a member of the Brother Rice Counseling team that addresses student preparation and needs on many levels.

On page 13 of the beautiful Brother Rice High School glossy publication, Sister is pictured with another team member and two students in the Student Support Section that states as their mission “to guide each student academically, socially, and vocationally, empowering them to make wise decisions, discover their potential, and grow in confidence, all while rooted in moral values and God’s love.” The section ”What our Parents Say” corroborates the mission wholeheartedly.

Sister Mary Elena, you do us BFS proud!
