Happy Guardian Angel Day! Have you thanked your special Angel lately?

Though the lowest rank of the 9 Choirs of Angels, it is our personal Guardian Angel who accompanies us from birth to death. Some get to travel all over the earth while others are homebound. Some have to work hard to keep us out of mischief. Don’t you wonder what their “conversations” are like when they get together to share their stories. M-m-m…. As children we learned a simple prayer to them: “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side  to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.” Does your Guardian Angel have a name? If not, now is the time! Conversation between us and them flows so much more easily when we address our Guardian Angel by name.

Community Update (1)

On this day in 2023 we opened a year of celebration and thanksgiving commemorating 130 years of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters in the United States of America. We thank Sister Mary Joseph Tirpak (Chairperson), Sisters Ann Therese deGuise, Helen Marie Gwiazda, Jean Therese Baumann, Mary Sninsky, Patricia Lynn Farrell, and Roberta Ann Leskey for their willingness to serve on the 130th Celebration Committee and for all they have done to make this special year memorable. Our year of celebration will culminate on Sunday, October 20, 2024.

“Let all…strive to follow the humility and poverty of our Lord Jesus Christ and let them remember that we should have nothing else in the whole world except…having food and clothing. We are content with these. They must rejoice when they live among people considered of little value and looked down upon, among the poor and the powerless, the sick and the lepers, and the beggars by the wayside.” St. Francis, the Earlier Rule

Bernardine Franciscan Sisters 130th Anniversary

1894 – 2024

                                 Bernardine Franciscan Sisters

                                       Congregational Ministers

“Women of the Church, how rich is your legacy! Women of the Church how great is your faith!

Women of the Church, well-springs of integrity, Lead us in the ways of peace!”

Women of the Church - Carey Landry @ 2005 Carey Landry, Published by OCP

Women of the Church, how rich is your legacy handed down to us by the women in our Congregation who from our founding in the United States brought us to this day and time with their zeal and commitment. Their legacy is profound and multifaceted in their pivotal roles in our Congregation and broader society.

From our humble beginnings, when Mother Veronica Grzedowska and companions set foot on American soil on October 16, 1894, trust in Divine Providence was deeply rooted in their lives under the shadow of the cross.

Since this early time, our leaders have a long and rich history of hope as they responded to the evolving needs of society in the United States, Brazil, Liberia, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Mozambique. Through their tireless efforts in spiritual formation, education, health care, and social service and in their commitment to contemplation and action, they forged a rich history of transformative service and empowerment, each in their own distinctive character and contribution.

Our congregational ministers embraced the charism and the mission providing spiritual leadership and guidance within our Congregation and beyond. They have been instrumental in fostering spiritual growth and community building as an international congregation.

The contributions of our women in leadership have significantly influenced our lives in our congregation, our church and our society. We offer tribute to these women, called by God, who were elected to Congregational Leadership, through the voice of the sisters:

1894 - 1912    Mother Veronica Grzedowska

1912 - 1930    Mother Hedwig Leszczynska

1930 - 1942    Mother Mary Angela Wojtkowiak

1942 - 1954    Mother Edmund Loyes

1954 - 1966    Sister Mary Chrysostom Yadusky

1966 - 1972    Sister Ernestine Ciepiela

1972 - 1982    Sister Laetitia Okoniewski

1982 - 1988    Sister Gerald Zaleski

1988 - 2000   Sister Mary Margaret Jackson

2000 - 2011    Sister Madonna Marie Harvath

2011 - 2022    Sister Marilisa Helena da Silva

2022 -              Sister John Ann Proach

The legacy of our Congregational Ministers is a testament to their dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment to continue the mission of Jesus with vitality, prophetic vision and trust in Divine Providence.

As women of great faith and well-springs of integrity, we are blessed with a rich legacy leading us in the ways of peace!

Nine Days of Prayer for a United Nation – from the Sisters of Mercy

This election year has exposed deep rifts within our country as candidates and their supporters launch personal attacks on one another and on the most marginalized of our society, including immigrants and refugees, Americans and workers displaced by a globalized economy. Please join the Mercy Community in praying daily for voters to consider the common good in their choices for national, state and local leaders; to treat with respect even those who hold differing opinions about the direction of our country; and to commit ourselves to a peaceful transfer of power after the election. Let us be Mercy at this time through our prayer, rhetoric and actions at this time of potential national stress.

The Novena Prayers for October 28 [yesterday] and October 29 [today] are printed today.

The remaining Novena Prayers will be posted on their appropriate day.

October 28 (Day 1)

Let us pray for all of our neighbors, especially the political candidates and their families, all voters who exercise their right to participate in a safe and secure process, and all those who work at the polls.

Which is the first of all Commandments? Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear O Israel! The Lord our God is alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your souls, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” ~Mark 12: 28-31

We must regain the conviction that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it. We have had enough of immorality and the mockery of goodness, faith and honesty. It is time to acknowledge that lighthearted superficiality has done us no good. ~Laudato Sí #229

October 29 (Day 2)

Let us pray that all citizens spend time in thoughtful and respectful dialog and consider the common good and work toward peace and healing in our divided nation.

"Blessed are the Peacemakers for they will be called children of God."  ~ Matthew 5:9

Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one…Bring healing to our lives that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.  ~Laudato Sí’ Prayer

October 30 (Day 3)

Let us pray for leaders who reflect “the great leaders of history who refuse to barter their ideals for the sake of their personal interests and who rebelled against the lies of their times.” ~Sister Joan Chittister, OSB

You guide me along the right path for the sake of your name. Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side, your rod and staff give me courage. ~Psalm 23

Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe for all things speak of you. Awaken our praise and thankfulness for every being that you have made. Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is. ~Laudato Sí’ Prayer

Let us pray that all citizens will be treated with dignity and respect and not be discriminated against or intimidated during the voting process. Let there be peace!

The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 4:6-7

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. ~Laudato Sí’ Prayer
