Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the Power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

A Fete for the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters in Shenandoah, PA
Sunday, April 28, 2019, was a blessed day for our Community and for the people of Shenandoah, PA. The Parishioners and the Borough through the kindness of the Mayor showed their gratitude for the 120 years of presence of the Bernardine Sisters. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian, the main coordinator of the event, gave a very thoughtful homily and after the Liturgy sponsored a delicious lunch followed by a Program. The Bernardine Sisters received a Proclamation from Mayor Andrew J. Szczyglak. The more than 15 Bernardine Sisters present at the event personally received congratulations from the people. We thank Sister Marietta Andrzejewska who, with the help of Sister Maria Rose Zielinski, organized a Committee of people who simply made the event such a special one! The initiative for this event was the Celebration of the 125 th anniversary of the arrival of the Bernardine Sisters in the United States and their arrival 5 years later in Shenandoah, PA. More to say? It was a sign of great gratitude for the long-time presence of the Sisters and an expression of love and appreciation. Sister Marietta wrote, God is good and [the] people of Shenandoah, too. Msgr. Bocian and the parish sponsored everything.
In my address, I expressed my gratitude on behalf of all the Bernardine Sisters, and with joy reminded them that in 1894 our foundress Mother Veronica Grzedowska arrived in New York and in 1900 three Sisters [Mother Frances Thomalla, Mother Marie Borowska, and Mother Hyacinth Grzybowska] arrived in St. Casimir’s Parish in Shenandoah, PA. From this sacred place, a small town, we have had more than 100 vocations, the greatest number from any single parish in our history. My ending remarks were: On this beautiful Feast of Divine Mercy, we thank God for all the blessings we have received in our lives, and for the many vocations from St. Casimir’s parish that have enriched our Bernardine Franciscan congregation over the years. You are forever in our prayers, and we trust that God will continue to bless you and your families in the future. May God, in his mercy, keep you always in his loving care.
Prayers are requested for the following sick and needy Sisters, Family, Associates, Friends and Benefactors and for those who companion them during this time:

From the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR)
Dear [Sister] Marilisa, The ongoing response of LCWR members to the increasing crisis at our southern border continues to speak to the readiness, willingness and ability for women religious to be present at the margins and peripheries of our times. The situation at the border changes constantly and the focus of most need shifts with the actions of our government policies and procedures. The ripple effect of those activities create humanitarian situations along the border.
We received the following email from Catholic Charities (see below) and share it with you in its entirety because it provides valid information, identified needs and verifiable ways in which we might respond. Thank you for the consistent ways you continue to respond to this crisis. LCWR's response to requests for volunteers and funding speaks to the commitment women religious maintain to the gospel mandate of compassionate presence and support to our sisters and brothers in need. May we continue to pray, speak, and respond to these signs of our times.
Gratefully, Carol Zinn, SSJ, Executive Director, Leadership Conference of Women Religious, 8737 Colesville Road Suite 602, Silver Spring, MD 20910, (W) 301-588-4955
E-mail from Catholic Charities
Dear Carol [Zinn], I'm writing with yet another plea for assistance at the border. I will be going to Laredo soon with some monetary donations, but the situation there far exceeds what we are able to do. There are 17 other Catholic Charities agencies that are absorbing the migrants as best they can, but Laredo clearly is in the greatest need right now. If you think it appropriate, I'm wondering if you could once again alert LCWR members to this need. I will also copy CMSM on this and will alert the USCCB. The Washington Post's Nick Miroff reports that it is "the worst I have ever seen. Overcrowding at Border Patrol stations in South Texas has become so acute in recent days that U.S. authorities have taken the rare step of using aircraft to relocate migrants to other areas of the border simply to begin processing them," Miroff reports.
Staff who returned from Laredo this weekend report that this influx has created an untenable situation in the Laredo sector of the border where our small Catholic Charities agency is trying to cope with hundreds of additional migrants daily. (They were prepared to receive 200 people/day but now are receiving over 500/day.) Their donated supplies have been depleted. They are in desperate need of FOOD
[canned chicken noodle soup, pinto beans, fruit cocktail, corn tortillas, water] CLOTHING- -Children and Adult--Men and Women in Small, Medium and Large (No XL). SHOES
-all sizes except very large. BELTS and SHOELACES
(these are taken away in the detention center) DIAPERS
-all sizes.
There is also a huge need for Spanish-speaking volunteers who might be able to spend a month in Laredo.
Any donations of goods from Amazon, Wal-Mart, etc. can be sent to
Catholic Charities Diocese of Laredo, La Frontera Shelter, 1616 Callaghan St, Laredo, TX 78040

A Mother Veronica Moment
Shocking news came when Father Malusecki, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Reading, announced that he had to close the school for a year so that a church could be built over the school building. The sisters would be without financial sustenance during that time. In this crisis, Mother Veronica was relying on God’s power.
”Though, of ourselves, we can do nothing, we will rely with a firm hope in the power of God … the will of God is our only support. We must trust, trust, trust.”

125th Anniversary – Stamford, CT
Sunday, May 19, 2019, was a remarkable date for all those who participated in the Liturgy and Reception at the Parish of the Holy Spirit, Stamford, CT to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Congregation of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters!
Rev. Msgr. Kevin Royal (Celebrant of Mass) in his homily gave a brief and amazing history of the Bernardine’s. No paper, all from His heart! I was in awe while he was delivering those words and telling the people about the mutual love between the Sisters and the Parishioners. Msgr. J. Peter Cullen (Co-Celebrant) together with Deacon Mr. Peter Adamski (to be ordained on June 1, 2019) asked for our prayers. I really want to thank Sisters Joanne Helen Grejdus, Carol Ann Nawracaj and Deborah Ann Surgot who, with the BFS Associates,
prepared the Liturgy and Reception. Words are not enough to thank them. I hope the pictures and videos will show how meaningful the Liturgy was. I thank also the Sisters who were present to represent the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters and collect all the memories from former students! During the Reception, a Representative of the City Mayor presented the Proclamation naming May 19, 2019 as Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Day! The Proclamation will be shared with you as was done previously with the Proclamation from the Shenandoah, PA celebration.
In ALL we give thanks to the LORD!
Thank you from the Sister of Stamford, CT
The Sisters at Heart of Mary Convent extend joyful thanks to Sister Marilisa da Silva, Sister Madonna Marie Harvath, and to all the Sisters who joined us for our local area celebration of our 125th Anniversary at Holy Spirit Parish. We thank also all our Bernardine Franciscan Associates who joined us in preparing a magnificent feast for all who attended the reception after the Mass. Msgr. Royal's homily and Msgr. Cullen, our co-celebrant, and our soon-to-be ordained deacon and our Associate, Peter Adamski, made the Eucharistic celebration very special. The parishioners were overjoyed to see and hear the 12 of us process into Church with booming voices of praise as we sang the entrance hymn with all the people. One person said she felt an immediate rush of God's presence into her heart, and tear-filled eyes at the entrance procession and singing. Parishioners were grateful to witness the renewal of vows of the sisters. A profound silence fell on the community as they listened in awe. Mayor Martin couldn't join us but sent a representative with a rich and meaningful congratulations proclaiming the day in honor of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters on our 125th Anniversary in America.

From Sister Marilisa da Silva
Mary Immaculate Hospital, VA
Sisters, I am sharing some news with you about Mary Immaculate Hospital. As you know since 1996,
the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters have been in a partnership with the Bon Secours Sisters for the governance
of Mary Immaculate Hospital. The management of the hospital has been under the complete control of the Bon Secours Health System since that time. The partnership has worked very well, the Bon Secours have been very respectful and supportive of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters, and they continue to honor our 1996 Agreement.
The health care environment has been very complex and the need of Partnerships is visible.
The governance decisions involve complex financial issues, which require the Bernardine Franciscans, who are Members in the governance of MIH, to make also very complex decisions, often in a short time frame. Given the complexities of the health care environment, many congregations are now realizing that the demands of health care governance and the changing demands of our congregations requires that some difficult decisions need to be made. We have given much thought to how best to carry on the ministries of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters. After our best efforts, consultation, and prayer, the Congregational Leadership have decided that it is time to give up the Bernardine Franciscans’ position as Members in the governance of MIH. This means that the BFS will no longer be the canonical sponsor of MIH. Mercy Bon Secours Health will succeed to the canonical responsibility of the BF.
The sisters who live and work at MIH will continue to do so. The withdrawal of the BFS as Members does not change these arrangements. Our legacy will be maintained through the continuing education for employees in the Franciscan heritage and in the history of MIH.
Sister Madonna Marie Harvath shared this announcement with the Sisters who minister at MIH on Monday, May 20, 2019 and on Tuesday, May 21, 2109 with the Board of the Hampton Region.
We are grateful to the Mercy and Bon Secours Health System for the smoothness of the canonical and legal process. There are some issues where confidentiality needs to be respected.
I am very grateful that God provided a time for me to meet in Rome with other Leaders of Congregations and hear what Cardinal Braz de Aviz and Pope Francis shared about decisions that we need to have courage to make. Be assured that we are open to questions and we can share more at the Assembly in June. May the grace of God enlighten us as we open ourselves to the newness of our Life and Charism in today’s world!

Job Opportunity Director, Mission Advancement Office
Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity
The apostolic religious community of the Sisters of the Missionary Servants of the Most Blessed Trinity (MSBT) seeks first to glorify the Triune God. The specific mission of MSBT is the preservation of the Catholic faith and to work in areas where people are spiritually neglected and abandoned with a chief effort to develop a missionary spirit among the laity. Our charism is manifested with Sisters out on mission as well as the offering of three spirituality facilities to host groups and individuals with a variety of retreats, speakers and programs. The position is located on the grounds of the 6-building Motherhouse in northeast Philadelphia which is adjacent to Pennypack—a 1,600-acre park with deer, woodlands, meadows and trails.
The Director, Mission Advancement reports directly to the leadership Council and is responsible for the development of a robust strategic plan to enhance our fundraising programs, projects and appeals. Serving as the Major Gift/Planned Giving Officer, the position will supervise the Direct Marketing position and formulate donor engagement strategies to build and strengthen relationships with the Sisters and the donors.
We require the successful candidate to be an active Catholic with a bachelor’s degree and 5-7 years’ experience in all aspects of fundraising to include major gift acquisitions, planned giving, and the development of donor events; a CFRE is preferred with strong relationships in the Catholic fundraising communities. Demonstrated leadership skills are essential to work in the team-based environment as well as with the Advisory Council. The successful candidate will be computer literate. For more information about the community visit
www.msbt.org
If you are seeking a mission-driven opportunity and have a concern for those who may be spiritually neglected and want to make a difference, you may be what we need to develop and sustain our mission. Please dialogue with your Bernardine Sister Councilor.

Congress on Holiness – Brazil – October 7-9, 2019
Sisters, this message is about a Congress on Holiness taking place in the South of Brazil in the beginning of October, 2019. Our Sister Elisangela Pereira Machado (Elis)
is involved in many ways. [Below is a Google Translation of the original Portuguese].
Presentation
The II International Congress of Theology of PUCRS [Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul] has the theme "Holiness and public responsibility", and will be held from October 7 to 9, 2019, in the Auditorium of Building 9 of this university. The objective of the event is to promote an environment of theological-pastoral reflection on the experience of holiness in the public space of today's society. The exhortation of Pope Francis Gaudete et exsultate
[('Rejoice and Be Glad'; from Matthew 5:12) is the third apostolic exhortation of Pope Francis, dated 19 March 2018 (the Solemnity of Saint Joseph) and published on 9 April 2018, subtitled "on the call to holiness in today's world."] will illuminate this reflection. For this, specialists in the areas of Holy Scripture, Church Fathers, Vatican Council II and Latin American pastoral theology will be called. The aim is to obtain an understanding of holiness that is at the same time based on the ecclesial tradition and relevant to the current Brazilian context. The dimension of the "public responsibility" of the Christian life will take center stage. This event is an initiative of the Postgraduate Program in Theology of PUCRS.
