Outreach Mission – The Bernardine Center
Sister Sandra Lyons, Keisha (employee), David and Alberta (clients of Westside Brunch meals)
The Bernardine Center began in February 1986 by the Sister Rose MacDermott to provide a helping hand to low-income individuals and families in the Chester, PA neighborhoods of Delaware County.
The Food Pantry, initiated in 1986, is the Center’s focus program providing a supplemental ten days of food for each family member of a household (30 meals/member) per month. To complement the food pantry assistance, the Westside Brunch began in 2001 providing hot meals three times each week for anyone in need.
The Center has in the past, and continues to offer educational, spiritual, and advocacy programs to help clients build better lives for themselves, their families and their neighborhoods. Examples of recent programming include the Women’s Peace Empowerment bi-weekly prayer and meal gatherings, Anger Management Classes, the “Bernardine Treasures” clothing closet, and the “Franciscan Delight” garden that supplies fresh veggies for the Center’s food pantry and brunch meals.
The Bernardine Center has been an approved and participating member of the State Food Program through the PA Department of Agriculture that dedicates a specific dollar amount annually in grant funding to each approved pantry based on need as shown by the number of clients who frequent each specific pantry.

Outreach Mission – Doorways of Hope
Sister Jean Jacobchik, OSF and a young student
The Doorways of Hope Program was founded in September 2011. The Bernardine Franciscan Immigration Core Team did research in Reading, Pennsylvania to determine the greatest need for immigrants residing in the city.
Speaking with the mayor and the Director of the Hispanic Center, it was concluded that education was the best way to enable the immigrant population to thrive in this country. Their suggestion was to begin teaching English to children during their pre-school years so as to help them achieve proficiency in their later studies.
The Sisters approached Father Winne [Rev. George R. Winne], pastor of St. Joseph’s parish, requesting the possibility of using a classroom in their Parish Center on 8th Street in Reading for the program. Father graciously accepted their request.
Sister Jean Jacobchik, OSF was assigned to set up the program and classroom in the basement of St. Joseph’s Parish Center. They were blessed with donations from many sources and officially began teaching in September 2011.
Sister Jean became the Director of the Program and Mrs. Lori Anewalt became the first teacher along with Ruth Gavin her assistant. Twelve children enrolled that first year.
Most years the classes averaged between 16-19 students. It became a Catholic Christian
Head Start Program immersing the children and their parents in English and helping them to navigate the school system. Besides a religious trust they learn the basics of letters, numbers, colors, and the ability to socialize with others their own age.
Students from Alvernia University’s Occupational Therapy Program spend some internship hours helping the children as well.
Due to flooding issues in the basement at St. Joseph’s, the program was moved to the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Motherhouse adjacent to Alvernia University. A decline in enrollment came with the relocation of the program because of transportation difficulties.

Outreach Mission – Mother Veronica Resource Center
Seated: Students. Standing left to right: Sister Joelle Mrozoski and Sister Cara Lucille Garofalo.
The long-standing Immigration Core Team of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters held a multicultural dinner event on January 11, 2014, where invited guests from the Berks County / Reading area shared with the Sisters a variety of favorite foods from their countries of origin. The meal was a welcoming time for sharing easily with each other. Table conversations revolved around the specific needs for which our immigrant guests sought help in order to enable them to negotiate the newness of life in Reading and to adjust more readily. They suggested that the Sisters might help them adapt to succeed in their new lives by providing a resource center where questions could be asked that they hesitated to ask other agencies in the city due to trust issues.
With this request, the Mother Veronica Resource Center located on South 6th Street in Reading, Pennsylvania became a reality through the brainstorming of the Immigration Core Team and the approval and efforts of the Congregational Leadership Team.
The Center offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), General Education Diploma (GED) preparation – high school equivalency (in both English and in Spanish), citizenship preparation, and computer skills. In addition to classes, the Center provides tutoring and makes social services and educational services information available, both in English and in Spanish.
Sister Dorothy Sepkowski, its first director and primary instructor, and Sister Antoinette Keiser, who set up a computer lab and taught computer skills, were the pioneers who made the Mother Veronica Resource Center a reality. As the number of students grew and more space was needed, the Center moved in 2017 from 502 S. 6th Street to the former rectory of SS. Cyril & Methodius Church at 449 S. 6th Street. Hundreds of students have been served at the Center by Sisters and volunteer instructors from the community.
Classes run from September until the first week of June. During the 2nd half of June and the month of July, some tutoring and English conversation classes are provided for students who wish to continue their studies during the summer.

“Over 500 first-year students, with their advisors and orientation leaders, participated in the annual Orientation Day of Service! Volunteers participated in a scavenger hunt while packing backpacks with school supplies and learning more about the University and its core values. Over 7,000 items will be donated to Muhlenberg and Governor Mifflin School Districts just in time for back-to-school”!
